Pearce Rd 1: Hopton

Hopton is a familiar sight to any experienced downhill racer in the UK, but presented a fresh challenge to RGsquadron newbies MickWhyte and Jim Lycett. Pearce Cycles Round 1 is their first major event, a real baptism of fire on a track that's hosted the NPS and national champs in the past.

Practice on Saturday went well for both riders, with RGsquadron old-boy Greg Hampton walking the course with Mick.Good weather prevailed and both riders had an excellent day.
Come race day, the weather turned for the worse. April showers changed the track and had our lads reaching for their Maxxis Wet Screams to get purchase on one of the rootiest tracks in the UK.
Jim is riding new brakepads and Alligator brake rotors from Ready to Ride Cycles and will soon be testing a

Works Components 1.5 HT Angular Reducer Headset.

In run one, Jim posted a good time of 2.46, with Mick sitting in seventh with a 3.00. Both riders were confident that they had time to find, and set off back up the hill to get the second race run knocked out.

In run two, Jim was true to his word and took 5 seconds off his first run, posting a 2.41 and securing 13th in Junior. An incredible start in what is pretty much the most competitive category of racing.

Mick was Mr Consistency, and perhaps missing his usual seven race runs at RG timing days, and posted another 3.00. That was still enough to land him a firm 10th in a Veterans field of 40 riders!
No podiums, but good solid results in the points for both. Job's a good'un.
